useable power and traction. this is why impors kick domestics ass.. we have more suspension adapting options than lets say a mustang.. now you can make a big block v8 that puts down 900+hp.. but the thing is when at the track is it going to go where you want it to?? domestic muscle cars are all too high(with the exception of the corvette which is lower than a modified z) now a z with 900hp and the naturally inherient heavy weight would do better than 12's than a 600hp z.the engine is about the same weight with more boost(so what the lag is bad)but you would be able to finish the quarter faster..
